Permanent Downlighting for Lehigh Valley Homes

Roofline lighting outlines your house. Downlighting washes light down the face of it — across the stone, the siding, the garage doors, the front walk. It is the difference between a house that is outlined at night and a house that is lit.

Most homeowners come to Trimlight thinking about holiday colors and discover downlighting is the setting they actually leave on 300 nights a year. A soft warm white pointed down the front elevation makes a house look the way it does in a real estate photo, every night, without a single ground fixture in the mulch bed.

It is the same permanent channel system, aimed differently.

What Downlighting Does That Roofline Outline Does Not

Lights the Wall, Not the Edge

Downward-aimed LEDs wash the actual face of the house. Stone, brick, board and batten, and columns get depth and texture instead of a bright line along the gutter.

Architectural, Not Decorative

Set to warm white it reads as designed exterior lighting rather than seasonal decoration. Guests notice the house looks good and never think about the lights.

No Fixtures in the Mulch

Ground-mounted uplights get knocked out of alignment by mowers, buried by mulch, and filled with water. Downlighting lives under the roofline and stays where it was aimed.

Doubles as Security Light

Light coming down the wall covers the doors, the walk, and the driveway approach. It removes the dark pockets close to the house without a harsh motion floodlight.

Same System, Same Channel

Downlighting is not a second product bolted on. It is the same permanent channel and the same app, configured to light downward on the sections where that makes sense.

Still Does Every Holiday

Warm white most of the year, orange in October, red and green in December. Choosing downlighting does not cost you the color capability.

Downlighting vs Landscape Uplighting

They are not the same thing and they do not compete. Uplighting sits in the beds and throws light up into trees and across textured surfaces from below. Downlighting comes from the roofline and pushes light down over the elevation and the ground in front of it.

Most homes look best with some of both, and plenty of Lehigh Valley properties already have landscape lighting installed. The practical advantage of downlighting is that it has no ground presence at all — nothing to mow around, nothing to re-aim every spring, nothing that fills with water over a Pennsylvania winter.

  • Downlighting: mounted under the roofline, aimed down the wall
  • Uplighting: mounted at grade, aimed up into trees and facades
  • Downlighting has zero footprint in the landscape beds
  • Nothing to re-aim after mowing, mulching, or snow
  • Adjustable brightness from subtle to full wash
  • Warm white for everyday, any color when you want it
  • Lifetime product warranty, same as the rest of the system

Downlighting Questions

What Lehigh Valley homeowners ask about permanent downlighting.

What is the difference between downlighting and roofline lighting?

Roofline lighting points outward and outlines the shape of the house, which is what you want for holiday colors. Downlighting points down and washes the face of the house below the mounting point. Same channel, same app, different aim. Most installations we do in the Lehigh Valley use a combination, with the aim chosen section by section based on what is below it — stone, a garage door, or a walkway.

Do I have to choose one or the other?

No. Danny works this out on site during the estimate, because it depends entirely on your elevation. A two-story with deep overhangs and a stone front takes downlighting extremely well. A single-story ranch with low eaves may get more out of a roofline outline. Most homes end up with both, configured across different runs.

Is it bright enough to actually light the walkway?

For the area close to the house, yes — the front steps, the entry, the first stretch of walk, and the driveway apron directly in front of the garage. It is not a substitute for path lighting running out to the street, and we would not tell you it is. Think of it as lighting the house and the ground immediately around it rather than lighting the whole property.

Will it shine in my windows?

It should not, and that is an aiming question handled at install. The channel mounts under the roofline and directs light down the exterior wall, not back into the glass. On homes where a window sits directly below a run, the aim and brightness for that specific section get adjusted. Every bulb is individually controllable, so a section can be dimmed or turned off entirely without affecting the rest.

What does downlighting cost compared to roofline lighting?

Roughly the same, because it is the same system. Pricing is driven by the length and complexity of the runs, not by which direction the light points. Most Lehigh Valley installations land between $3,000 and $8,000 or more. Danny measures the elevation and gives you an exact number at the free in-home estimate.

Can I add downlighting to a system I already have?

Often yes, depending on how your existing runs were installed and where you want to add coverage. If you already have Trimlight on the house and want to extend it to a section that is currently dark, call and describe what you are picturing. Danny can usually tell from the address and a couple of photos whether it is a straightforward extension.
